“Untold Stories was created to support communities to celebrate their heroes in their own way; to highlight hidden stories; and to help tell more diverse and representative stories in London’s Public Spaces. We thought that Unearthing Poplar was an inspiring project, really driven by local people. It recognises, captures and preserves local figures in an area that has been subject to very rapid change. It’s wonderful to see the final mural, which brings back much loved people and places from the area’s past.”
Tommy Flowers Foundation unveiled their new mural of landlady and actor, Queenie Watts, near the site of the former Ironbridge Tavern, which she ran. Research uncovered that Francis Bacon was a regular at the Ironbridge and he was added to the mural following community consultation.
A local resident says: “Near here was Dunkeld Street, now completely built over and forgotten, bombed in World War Two, taking with it All Hallows Church and the very large wall paintings in there. At least with the new mural, we’re getting something of our history back.”
The mural is a collaboration between street artists, Jimmy C and Zabou.
